چکیده

An earlier analysis of chipping fracture in brittle solids is here extended to include the case of blocks with inclined side faces and non-normal contact loading. The simple relation PF = βKch for the critical chipping load PF in terms of indent location h and material toughness Kc is preserved, with angular coordinates simply incorporated into the β coefficient. Chipping fracture tests using a Vickers indenter near the edges of glass blocks with non-orthogonal faces is used to validate the analysis. Implications of the results in relation to practical engineering, biomechanical and anthropological structures are indicated.

On the mechanics of surface and side-wall chipping from line-wedge indentation

Chipping in glass plates from line-wedge contact loading is studied as function of the wedge’s subtended angle 2β, its inclination angle φ, and the distance h from a corner having a subtended angle 90◦−θ . A brittle-fracture analysis in conjunction with the FEM technique is used to elucidate the role of geometric variables on chip morphology and chipping load. Closedform relations are developed...

A universal relation for edge chipping from sharp contacts in brittle materials: A simple means of toughness evaluation

An analysis of chipping fracture in brittle solids is presented. Cracks are introduced into the edges of selected materials, including soda-lime glass and fine-grain ceramics, using a Vickers indenter in monotonic loading. The ensuing chip morphology is examined and shown to exhibit a certain geometrical similarity, independent of material properties. A simple universal relation is derived for ...

An Experimental Investigation on Surface Roughness and Edge Chipping in Micro Ultrasonic Machining

Surface quality including surface roughness and edge chipping is a key process measure in micro ultrasonic machining (Micro-USM) as an efficient process for micromachining of hard and brittle materials. Process parameters such as ultrasonic vibration amplitude, static load, type of tool material, type and size of abrasive particles and slurry concentration can influence the surface quality. How...

An analysis of chipping in brittle materials

The chipping process in a brittle material subjected to a uniformly applied edge load has been investigated. The present analysis extends earlier work by recognizing that as the chip is formed it may bend and change the loading at the crack tip. This geometry change introduces a nonlinear effect and has significant influence on the phenomenon. The nonlinear effect was demonstrated by incorporat...
